Shelfie privacy policy

Last updated: 11 October 2026

Shelfie is an independent client for Audiobookshelf, a server you choose. We do not operate your library server or require a Shelfie account.

Your device and your server

Your server address, library metadata, downloads, reading and listening progress, bookmarks and preferences are stored on your device. Access and refresh tokens are kept in secure storage. Your password is used to sign in and is not stored by Shelfie. Your operating system may retain secure storage or backups after uninstalling; its settings control those copies.

Shelfie sends sign-in requests, library requests and progress updates to your chosen Audiobookshelf server. Its operator controls how that data is handled. Single sign-on opens your identity provider in the browser; Shelfie does not see what you type there.

Optional automatic diagnostics

Automatic reporting is off by default. If you enable “Share crash and error reports”, release builds send native crash reports, filtered JavaScript errors, handled playback and reader errors, and limited playback events to New Relic in the EU. New Relic processes this information on our behalf to help diagnose app failures.

Reports can include code locations, device model, operating system and app version, language, timestamps, and identifiers generated by the diagnostic SDK for the device installation and session. These identifiers are pseudonymous; we do not attach your username or library account. Diagnostic data is not used for advertising or cross-app tracking.

Network request and response reporting, distributed tracing, reader WebView instrumentation, interaction tracing and console capture are disabled. Shelfie’s JavaScript error filter discards original error messages and keeps only bundle line and column locations. Its own diagnostic events use fixed names and allow only playback state, source type and track count. We do not deliberately include server addresses, credentials, book titles or reading progress in diagnostic events. Native crash reports are generated by the operating system and SDK and may include native exception details.

You can turn automatic reporting off in Settings at any time. This stops the agent in the current app process. Re-enabling it after stopping requires closing and reopening Shelfie. Turning it off does not delete reports already received. New Relic retains reports according to the retention settings of our monitoring account. Contact us with questions or requests concerning reports you have shared. Development builds do not send automatic diagnostics.

Local logs and problem reports

Shelfie keeps a small diagnostic log on the device even when automatic reporting is off. It contains up to 200 events from the last seven days: app starts, errors and limited playback events. The log uses the fixed names and allowed fields described above, without raw error messages, server addresses, credentials, book titles or reading progress. Older events are discarded when the log is accessed or updated. You can clear it in Privacy and support.

“Report a problem” creates a report with your description, app and device versions and this local log. You see the complete report before opening the system share menu. Shelfie does not send it automatically. Review your description for personal information or secrets before sharing. If you email us, we also receive your email address and anything you include. We use support correspondence to respond and investigate the problem, and retain it while it is needed for that purpose. You can request deletion by email.

Apple diagnostics

Apple may collect crash and diagnostic information according to your device privacy settings and the terms of App Store or TestFlight. Apple’s privacy policy governs that collection. Diagnostics made available to the developer can help us investigate crashes independently of Shelfie’s optional New Relic reporting.

External sites

Book lookup links can open Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Hardcover or romance.io in your browser. Their privacy policies apply when you choose to visit them.

Children and changes

Shelfie is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from them. We update the date above when this policy changes. The current policy is available in the app.
